Free Comic Book Day!

Time: All day during library hours (10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.)
Location: Reference Desk
During this annual one-day special event, teens can come into the library to receive a free comic book of their choice. It’s as simple as going to the Reference Desk and flashing us your valid Hawaii State Public Library System card. Elementary-age appropriate comics will also be available in limited quantity. Come early in the day to get the best selection!
The Art of Taiko with Kenny Endo

In celebration of National library Week 2009, Aina Haina is proud to present The Art of Taiko, an all-ages cultural featuring a demonstartion and lecture on the art of performing with taiko (Japanese drums). Kenny Endo is a performer, composer, and leader of contemporary taiko. He began his taiko career over 30 years ago as a member of Kinnara Taiko and San Francisco Taiko Dojo.
Musubi Man by the Honolulu Theatre for Youth
Date: Tuesday, March 24, 2009, 3:00-3:30 p.m.
Location: Aina Haina Library
“Musubi Man,” a local-style version of “the Gingerbread Man,” is based on a play written by Lee Cataluna. Like the gingerbread man in the classic tale, the Musubi Man is determined not to be eaten. He leads his pursuers on a merry chase until reaching the ocean and must match wits with a surfer. The surprise ending will feature a unique Hawaii “twist” to the story. Even if you don’t eat “local,” everyone is sure to enjoy chasing the Musubi Man as he runs from adventure to adventure! (Honolulu Theatre for Youth)
This free 30-minute program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library of Hawaii and is suitable for ages 2-5.
Program schedules are subject to change. Contact the library at least 10 days in advance to request a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation.
Kid’s Craft: Mini-books

Eco-crafter Evelyn Nakamura will demonstrate how to create two different kinds of mini-books for kids using scrap paper and cardstock. This free make-and-take craft class is sponsored by the Friends of Aina Haina Library and is limited to 20 participants. Please sign up for the class at the reference desk or call 377-2456.
Up, Up and Away

Mad Science will present another fun and educational science program, Up, Up and Away. The program will introduce “the principles of air pressure through the creation of flight of a hot air balloon, giant smoke rings from our Vortex Generator, levitating balls, a real hovercraft and movie special effects.” (www.madscience.org/hawaii)
A Hawaii Japanese New Year with Yuki-chan (book reading by Tokie Ching)

FUROSHIKI: ALTERNATIVE GIFT WRAPPING (SENIOR & ADULT craft)

Learn to wrap gifts of different sizes and shapes using only a fabric square. Using and reusing a furoshiki will eliminate wrapping paper, ribbons, tapes, tissue paper, and cardboard boxes.
La-ti-Da: singing, dancing, and fun by Aubrey Myers

Aina Haina Public Library is offering a free interactive music program for children featuring Aubrey Myers of La-ti-Da Music on Thursday, September 18th at 10:30 a.m. in the meeting room. Toddlers and preschoolers are invited to join Miss Aubrey for singing, dancing and lots of fun for everyone. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Based on the island of Maui, La-ti-Da music is dedicated to nurturing a lifelong love of music and movement in children. This 45-minute program offers parents and caregivers and opportunity to bond with their child in a creative musical environment. Call the library as soon as possible if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed.
Cindy Combs: Music from the Hawaiian Renaissance

Cindy Combs, singer, songwriter, and a slack key guitar virtuoso, will perform at Aina Haina Public Library. Combs, who has been performing for more than 30 years, blends Hawaiian music with contemporary jazz styling to create a sound all her own.
Suggested for all ages.
